The Basics of Photoshop

Photoshop uses several layers to help organize the image. A layer is an image, or sometimes a rasterized Photoshop file, that contains a single image—a square—that can have a wide variety of images placed on it, such as, a flower or a drawing.

When you create your first layer, the dialog box will prompt you to name it and give it a description; layers are usually given descriptive names, so that people are aware of them, and users can avoid inadvertently changing the wrong thing. For example, if you give your first layer a descriptive name like “Background,” you can avoid accidentally changing the background of your photos.

Any image placed on a layer can be resized and moved to any position on a layer. You can also move layers to different layers or group them together for manipulating the layout of the image. The Tools panel provides a convenient way to manipulate layers and apply various visual effects and options. The tools include a Paint Bucket tool that allows you to select an area of the image to fill with the current foreground color; a selection tool, which includes the Pencil, Brush, and Lasso tools; and a tool that helps you duplicate or mirror and flip the image. There are also tools that apply specific filters to the image or apply effects to the individual layers. Layers are often used to provide space for drawing or effects.

Photoshop Layers

Photoshop has layers and they look like this:

The image on the left is a single image with nothing added to it. The image on the right has a rectangle image on top of a background, which is the same as the image on the left, and then an oval image on top of the background. You can now place a text or shape layer on top of the rectangle and use the text or shape tools to place text on it. For example, if you use the Type tool, you can type on the text layer. If you use the Line tool, you can draw on it, and the rectangle layer is an object and doesn’t include any text or shapes.

Steps for Creating a Layers-based Photoshop Project: Create a blank document using Photoshop. Move the layer panel to the bottom of the Photoshop window so you can view and manage the different layers. Create a new image. Open the image by clicking the image tab. Create a new layer. Place a rectangle layer on the new layer. Add an oval layer on the rectangle layer

You don’t have to buy Photoshop to use Photoshop Elements. Some of the basic editing functions are also available in Elements.

I often use my iPad to edit images or audio files. Photoshop Elements can be downloaded for free for iOS and Android.

Elements is a great program to edit images, but it has limited features compared to the full Adobe Photoshop. Some of the features you can’t use in Elements are: layer masks, adjustment layers, Smart Brush, 3D effects, channel mixer and Advanced Photoshop.

Fortunately, there is a good workaround to make use of all the features of Photoshop Elements even on your iPad.

How to download Photoshop Elements for iOS:

Make sure you’re using the same sign in that you signed in in the previous step.

Download the trial version.

On your iPad, tap the “Home” icon and choose the “More” button

You can now download the app from the App Store.

You will be prompted to enter your billing information. Enter your payment information and continue using the app.

Open the app once downloaded to activate your account and continue using it.

How to download Photoshop Elements for Android:

Download the app from the Google Play Store.

Android devices have limits to how much you can download in a day.
