Almost all digital images need to be manipulated to some extent before they can be used as a medium for digital communication or visual media. In this beginner’s guide we will learn how to manipulate images in Photoshop Elements 10. We will start by adding color, using the adjustment layers and blending modes, effecting the brightness and contrast of images, reducing noise and applying different artistic filters.

1. Adding color to images

At the beginning of this lesson, we will start by adding color to an image using the Select Color tool and the Hue/Saturation dialog box.

To get to the Hue/Saturation dialog box select the color or range of colors you want to apply from the Select Color tool’s palette. If you wish to keep the original colors of the image you may select the color below the image.

The first slider controls the saturation of the selected color, from 0% (no saturation) to 100% (full saturation). The color below the image’s original color will be darker (lower saturation) and the color above the original darker.

The second slider controls the hue of the selected color, from 0° (no hue) to 180° (full saturation). If you rotate the Hue slider clockwise, the selected color will be shifted to red, yellow or orange. Rotating the Hue slider counter clockwise shifts the selected color to blue, green or violet.

Adjust the saturation and hue in the Hue/Saturation dialog box and click OK.

A dialog box will appear with the image, plus the settings you just applied to the current selection. If you did not select anything, the previous settings will be saved and you will return to the image in the previous lesson.

Alternatively, you may apply the same saturation and hue settings to the full image by selecting it from the toolbar. Once the selection is active, use the Hue/Saturation dialog box to adjust the colors for the whole image. Click OK and press Enter to apply the settings to the entire image.

You may notice that some images appear too bright or too dark, and that some subjects in the image are too light or too dark. To improve the contrast and brightness in an image you may use the Brightness/Contrast dialog box.

what happened to compiz-plugins-main?

To install Compiz-Plugins, I can do
sudo apt-get install compiz-plugins-main

But it says the package is not found.
Running apt-cache search “compiz-plugins” says nothing too.
And I did reinstall it in my ubuntu 14.04.

WebApi using Web Api OAuth2 when SignIn is invalid

The scenario is as follows:
I have a WebApplication and a WebApi installed, and I’m trying to figure out a way to authorize users to access the WebApp and the WebApi.
The users sign into the WebApp using their credentials, but the credentials are invalid, in which case the user needs to be redirected to the Login page to sign in again.

The problem is that when the user is redirected to the Login page the token or the code is lost and the Authentication fails.
What I need
When the user is redirected to the Login page the token is passed to the WebApi – in fact I can see it on the Server logs – however when the WebApi tries to authorize it fails because the token is not valid anymore.
What I was thinking
I was thinking that the WebApp could be a OAuth2 provider, and that when the user is redirected to the Login page I could store the Token in a session variable and then when the user is redirected back I can retrieve the token from the Session variable and send it to the WebApi and continue the authentication from where it left off.
Is this the right approach?
I was thinking that WebApi is more suitable to this kind of implementation, but I’m not 100% sure.
Any ideas are welcome.


The authentication happens in different places depending on the situation.

The user logs in, if he is already logged in, then the token is stored on a local file (cookie) and is sent with the WebApi resources.
The user logs in, but the credentials are invalid, a new token is created and stored in a session. When the WebApi client requests a resource, if the token is not found in the session, a 401 response will be sent.
The user is not logged in and requests a resource. The authentication happens on the server-side by issuing a token from the login service, and stores the token in the session.

I would choose the second option, instead of the first because it is simpler to implement.
