However, we covered only a basic approach, and this may lead to some limitations when you want to serve a client application.

The CXF-Portal allows you to create a web application, connect it to a CXF-REST service, use the services exposed by the REST service and serve the web application to the client.

In this post we will review a better approach, that uses JAX-RS services exposed by the CXF-REST services. As we will see, the process is more complex because you have to build a JAX-RS service as well as a JAX-RS client to consume it.

CXF-Portal and JAX-RS

The above-mentioned problem is that in the CXF-Portal approach you don’t have the possibility to develop a JAX-RS client to consume the service. Actually, you can build a simple web client, but it will be useless because the CXF-REST services aren’t suitable to send JSON as the default content-type.

For a client application to work, you need to implement a JAX-RS client (in our case we will use the Java API) to consume your services. Actually, you will have to write some code, but that will provide you a great flexibility.

Also, in this approach, you will find your services, not in a URL, but in a “class” that you can access. If you want to integrate your application with Spring REST you can use Spring’s JAX-RS support to have a more concise approach.
