In 1980, Paul LeRoy discovered a program called Coronado on a software demo disk and was so excited by it that he contacted Mark Griffiths at Autodesk and offered to purchase the source code. Mark offered to sell the software for US$4000.[1] After much pressure and persistence, Mark and Paul set a price of US$1000. Over the next two months they worked out the details, built the software, and released it on April 1, 1980. [1]

Paul and Mark had been working together since 1978 on the Paul LeRoy Graphic software, a CAD program. The first version of AutoCAD was a one-function program that only allowed creation of drawings. Mark took the next program in development, The Director, and expanded it to support both a two-dimensional (2D) drafting capability, and also plan drawing capabilities.

In November 1981, the first hard copy of AutoCAD, featuring a cover drawing by Paul LeRoy, was delivered to various magazines and customers, and by the end of 1982, more than 50,000 copies had been sold.[2]

AutoCAD was updated twice each year with new features. From 1983 to 1985, new features were added every six months. Then, beginning in 1985, AutoCAD released approximately every year. Changes to AutoCAD were often previewed on the CAD News bulletin board.

In addition, there is the program sketchCAD which is used for drawing in geometry, fabrication, and small assembly work. It was developed by CADengineering and SUREvision.

Community-based CAD [ edit ]

In addition to the official CAD, there are other smaller CADs. These tend to be community-based, with a strong support system as well as a small, but enthusiastic community.

Open source [ edit ]

In 2007, the Open Source version of AutoCAD was made available as open-source software. This version of AutoCAD is developed by various volunteers, but still in beta testing and development.[3]

The current version is AutoCAD R2018.

AutoCAD has the capability to edit Microsoft Word documents, including writing macros, running macros, inserting text, headers and footers, saving and printing documents. It has the capability to insert hyperlinks and pictures from digital cameras.

History
AutoCAD’s predecessor was Cadstart, a graphical programming language that used a line-by-line approach. One such tool was Cadstart 2, which allowed simple procedures to be linked together. It was available only for DOS.

After it was released in 1985, CADstart was rewritten as AutoCAD, one of the first 3D applications.

At the beginning, AutoCAD could only be used with mainframe computers. Later, the application was made available for personal computers (PC). The first version of AutoCAD for PCs, AutoCAD LT, was released in 1991.

Is it possible to set the permission of a file to be written-only with the user?

I’m about to create a small task manager for our clients, and I’m trying to find a nice solution to the permission issues.
Let’s say I have a script to create files and I want to create them, and only those files can be created by a single user.
I have tried with chmod 755, but if I have multiple clients accessing it, all will be able to create files.
Is it possible to make it be accessible by only one user? Is there a Linux command to do this?

You could use SELinux:
