Photoshop has been the industry standard for years, and it’s one of the few pieces of software that everyone knows. Those who are knowledgeable about the art of creating images swear by the program. There is no easy way to point to a photograph, graphic, or movie that a professional uses and say, “That’s not created with Photoshop.”

Nonetheless, most photographers who use Photoshop for editing are not professional and are often forced to use it because of the many limitations of other free or freeware image editors.

Photoshop Is The Industry Standard

Let’s face it: Photoshop is the industry standard in spite of Photoshop’s fundamental flaws. The same goes for Adobe and the many programs it offers such as Photoshop Elements or InDesign.

Adobe’s problem lies in the fact that it has traditionally been seen as the industry standard only because it’s the only program with a reasonable interface and powerful tools to edit images.

Maybe that’s changing though. There is one image editing program that is quickly becoming the industry standard, and it’s not a photo program — it’s free software called Gimp.

Gimp has risen in popularity in recent years with photographers who are finding the program to be more powerful than the tried-and-true Photoshop. The Gimp has a modular design that allows for quick, easy access to many of the program’s most powerful features. With Gimp, it’s easy to make sophisticated changes to your image.

Gimp’s power comes from its ability to work quickly and easily with and with few constraints. The Gimp is a true “program.” Unlike the Windows or Mac operating systems, it is a standalone program that doesn’t require a plug-in to run. For those familiar with Windows, the Gimp’s interface uses menus and images with a browser-like functionality similar to the popular Firefox or Safari browsers. There are also tools similar to those found in many image editors, such as layers, filters, and a variety of other tools.

The Gimp’s interface is simple and allows for quick and easy access to many of the program’s features.

About Photoshop and Photoshop Elements

Photoshop is a professional standard image editing software known for its features, functionality and stability. Its users can perform many edits, adjustments and effects, most of which Photoshop is aimed to perform.

Adobe Photoshop Elements is a simple graphics editor for professionals, hobbyists and students. It is a faster software, it is less capable, but you can still use many of the professional Photoshop tools, and even more as you work with textures and simple image editing.

Image Comparison

Adobe Photoshop and Photoshop Elements are completely different graphics editors. You will probably miss some features of Photoshop when editing with Photoshop Elements. But, Photoshop Elements has still many features in common with Photoshop, so it will help you to work with those features in other graphics editors.

The features of Photoshop Elements and Photoshop are almost the same. They both have the same performance. They have almost the same tools. They are both made for professional and non-professional users. And both have been designed for working with digital photography. But the differences in Photoshop Elements may make your work easier and so will the tools and features of Photoshop Elements.

Compared Photoshop Elements and Photoshop

We will start our comparison with the few features that are not the same, and will compare the rest of them as they are.

1. The Image Mode

Image Modes:

Photoshop Elements use TIFF, Photoshop use JPEG

Photoshop Elements has only three image modes. It works with JPEG images only: 8-bit, 16-bit and 32-bit

Photoshop has five modes available. Photoshop elements use Photoshop element 11 Pro Fullscreen mode and Photoshop CS6 uses the following 5 modes:

8-bit: Lossless black and white mode

16-bit: Lossless black and white mode

32-bit: Color: Use more or less color information in the image

48-bit: Full color: Use all the color information in the image

64-bit: No color: Color is lost

You can change the image mode with the Image > Mode command.

Adjusting Clarity Adjust the clarity of an image. For example, if there’s an image of a subject in sunlight, you can increase the clarity to remove some of the haze of the light. You can use the increase or decrease tools to control how much is removed.

Blur Add blur to an image, giving a soft, dreamlike look. You can blur a large or small area with a radial blur effect or a Gaussian blur.

Brightness and Contrast Adjust the brightness and contrast of an image. You can use the tools in this group to increase or decrease brightness or contrast to create a different, more appealing effect.

Color Adjust the saturation, brightness, and color of an image, giving it a different look. You can use the options available for saturation, brightness, hue, and color to change the image’s tone.

Remove Noise Reduce the “grainy” appearance of an image, giving it a softer look. You can use the Amount slider to increase or decrease the amount of noise reduction.

Red Eye Delete red-eye from an image. This tool helps you to correct situations in which you captured the glare and reflections from the eyes of a person when taking a picture.

Question about scale invariant feature transform

I have a question related to the scale invariant feature transform (SIFT) descriptor.
Let us take a grey-scale image of size, n x m (say it is gray level in range of [0, 255])
Let us assume we have roughly, 7 keypoints all lying on a different scale.
In the software each keypoint is represented by an integer value.
I am not sure what significance this integer has with respect to any meaningful information.
How can one associate each keypoint with its corresponding location in a 3D array or say ids(1,2,3,4,5…) of each keypoint? What is the role of the integer?

A:

It’s simply an identifier for each keypoint. The keypoint with integer id of 10, may correspond to a keypoint with id 12 in a different scale. You don’t need an id in scale invariant feature transform, because it’s a scale free feature.
If you need to know for which scale each keypoint is associated, you can simply add a “scale” column to your image in which you add the scale value.

How can one associate each keypoint with its corresponding location in
a 3D array or say ids(1,2,3,4,5…) of each keypoint? What is the role
of the integer?

If you are looking into some sort of descriptor, the integer should be a unique identifier, that you can use to look for that keypoint.
I can’t really help you with the other part of the question, I’m not familiar with octave or matlab. But if you are referring to the size of the image, you can simply use the number of points in the keypoint.
