The easiest way for you to identify a file from a large list of potential file names is to first search by file type. Select the “New” row and select the type of file you are interested in. Then repeat the search by file name. This is particularly useful if you are looking for a particular file name, like a photo or image file. Remember, searching by file type might yield thousands of results, while searching by file name (or name extension) will narrow the number of results to just those files with that extension.

One thing to remember when working with media files, especially when performing forensic analysis or recovering the data from a mass storage device like a memory stick or SD card, is that file names will contain information that may be sufficient to identify the file in question and even allow you to locate it on the target medium. For example, the file name may contain the date and time the file was created, the date and time the media was formatted, the name of the camera or scanner used, any date or time stamps from the file, and more. Before you begin performing any kind of data recovery, be sure to check the file name. If you do not have the original file name, the media may be damaged and you may not be able to recover the file.

The media mounter used to create the file can also be a clue. For example, it may be a DVD, a USB stick, a memory stick, an SD card, or a camera. If we are talking about a memory stick, it is a fact that this type of media is usually formatted with FAT32 formatted partitions. For Windows devices, FAT32 is the only known format. On top of that, a USB stick is commonly formatted with FAT32 too.
