I have a function that takes a string as input, then finds the first duplicate string, and returns the number of occurrences.
Please check the code and help me in maximizing the performance.
def find_duplicates(string):

for a in string:
if string[0]!= a:
string = string[1:]
if string[-1]!= a:
string = string[:-1]
a_count = a_count+1

return a_count

I know that the code works correctly, but I wonder if there is a better way to find the first duplicate.
