What Is Photoshop Elements?

Adobe Photoshop Elements is a free alternative to Photoshop. You can use it to edit pictures, create logos, write poems and cartoons, compose music and make visual art.

Photoshop Elements is a graphics editing program that is designed for prosumer use. It’s basically a stripped down version of Photoshop where you can save your projects as JPEG or PSD files. You can view images as thumbnails, edit images as layers, resize them as layers, and you can use layer masks.

Layers

You can edit, sketch, and animate with layers just like you can with Photoshop. You can resize layers and use layer masks. You can alter the transparency of layers, control the opacity of individual images and layers, and convert layers into selections that can be moved, stretched, cut, pasted, and scaled.

When it comes to design and layout, Photoshop Elements offers drag-and-drop tools and the ability to manipulate images with polygonal, rectangular, or oval shapes. You can also draw your own shapes and use the pencil tool to work on shapes. You can use the path tool to create complex and rigid shapes for illustration and graphic design.

Photoshop Elements supports more than 150,000 object and image types. You can also use its library of preinstalled art filters to enhance your photos and videos.

Clone Stamp

You can make seamless images by copying and pasting areas of an image. The Clone Stamp tool is used to duplicate selections in your image. You can also use the brush tool to create a new area of your photo.

Today’s Quick Poll: Four years ago, two of my close friends, David Levin and Chris McCabe, started a blog called “College Life with David and Chris.” I worked with them on the site for about a year. David and Chris had been friends since elementary school. They shared similar interests, and they made sense of the world together.

But their humor never seemed to translate well online. There were lots of famous fan clubs and fan art devoted to them, of course, but my friends always used their blog’s back-and-forths to make fun of those sites. Whenever someone posted something they found annoying, they’d declare that it was a “fan club” and then mock it.

It seemed like the only time David and Chris were going to find a place in the world where they were accepted for the people they were was at Princeton. Now they’re both at the University of Pittsburgh. My other close friend Jason Morgan has been friendly with David and Chris since junior high, and he knows that they live in a small college town called Uniontown. He often stops by for the weekend to spend time with them, and he goes to visit the campus whenever he can. My own college experience is much like Jason’s. We’re all in the same town, so we really only see each other at home.

My current situation, however, is not like that. A year ago, I got an e-mail with the subject line “We Got Tix.” I was shocked. I mean, I know Princeton is small and a small town, but I still didn’t expect that I would get tickets to a legitimate performance. David and Chris had told me when I was working with them that they would never give me tix. I had no way of knowing they weren’t lying.

I called Princeton’s box office and asked them how I got in. It turned out that they had just sent me an e-mail with two tickets. I thanked them, and then I told them I planned to send them to my friends. What I didn’t realize is that an error had been made. Instead of two tickets, they sent me eight tickets.

I’m really happy

* **Saving a.PSD file for use in other applications**. In the browser, you can save a Photoshop file as a PDF or a JPEG (for the web), and you can also export the file as a Bitmap for a graphics program.

There are also plenty of other features and options:

* **Professional workspace**. In the Photoshop Elements workspace, you can use any of the features you find in CS5. You don’t have to buy Photoshop and spend all that money learning how to work with the program.

If you’ve been using Photoshop since its first release, and you’ve used other programs like Illustrator, Fireworks, Paint Shop Pro, or Pagemaker, then you may feel at home in the Elements workspace. It offers many of the same features and capabilities as the full-featured version of Photoshop.

* **Instant previews of images**. You can see a picture immediately on the screen when you point the cursor at it, even while you’re working on a different image.

* **Search**. You can search for any word in an image, and then see the results in the thumbnail display.

* **Print dialog**. Photoshop includes an easy way to print a picture: open the Print dialog (choose File→Print) and then specify the size and other options.

* **Auto-enhance tools**. If you’re a beginner, you may prefer to leave things to the program. Photoshop has a collection of tools to help you get the best result (the “Auto” tools), but you can override them with the buttons on the dialog box. Photoshop remembers which tools you’ve used, and even suggests them as you open a new image; there’s no need to hunt for the “Auto” option.

* **Media browser**. This feature allows you to browse the pictures stored on your computer or flash drive, in folders and on web pages. For example, you can search for pictures of the same family and then rearrange them on the same screen. The metadata (the data describing each image) is stored in an XML file, which makes it easy to sort the results.

## Saving a Photoshop File
