## Starting Out with Simple Basic Tricks

The first time I tried to use Photoshop was only two years ago (it was version 5, the one before the current version). I started by using some of the more basic tools Photoshop comes with and started applying effects and techniques, just as you’d expect. I’m sure that if you’re a novice you also did this, and all right-thinking people find themselves doing this still when they begin. If you’re not careful, however, you end up with a lot of problems. For instance, you can accidentally paint a picture into a picture or change everything from sepia tones to neon colors. The good news is that you can just delete all the elements you added and start again, avoiding most of the pitfalls.

At the time, I didn’t have a clue as to what Photoshop was all about. I remember thinking, “I can’t believe I’m spending my time learning how to make little objects disappear!” After I cleaned up my first few images, though, I knew I had a strange addiction. All right, I accept that it’s a serious addiction — I spend many hours a week just playing with this program. Many people know the technical mumbo jumbo of Photoshop and the manual that goes with it. If you don’t, don’t worry; I show you the basics you need to know to get your work done quickly.

So where do you start? I recommend that you first use Photoshop to do the usual things — resizing, cropping, and so on. After you’ve mastered these tasks, you can start using some of the more advanced

1. Open Photoshop Elements

When you open Photoshop Elements, the first thing that you will see is the splash screen. To get to the main screen, click the down arrow icon in the bottom left corner and select File > Open.

2. Open a file

Depending on your file extension, you will see a number of different file types. If you are not sure, just click the down arrow icon in the bottom left corner. The files will be sorted into the top five file types according to the extension.

You can also use the search bar to filter the file types according to the extension.

3. Open a file

In the Files panel on the left side of the window, click the folder icon to select a file on your computer. Once you have selected a file, you can click the Open button in the top right to open it.

4. Adjust the size of the image

The size of the image you open in Photoshop is determined by the settings you use in the image editor. You have the option of increasing the size of the image by changing the size setting.

São Paulo, Brazil (CNN) — A third of the world’s population cannot read or write, even though governments spent $18 billion on literacy programs last year, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

The money was donated by rich countries, and it wasn’t all spent on books, but it made some inroads.

According to the organization’s report, released Tuesday, the share of the adult population in the 20 countries studied who could read a short text stood at 59% in 2002 and increased to 66% in 2010.

Between 2000 and 2010, the number of people who could read a newspaper article climbed from 14% to 19%. The number who could read newspapers stood at 55%.

People who could read news articles in the country they were in jumped from 38% to 51% during the same period.

There were also improvements in how people can read: Textbooks for children rose from 22% in 2000 to 24% in 2010.

Overall, these are modest gains, but it’s encouraging because everyone is not poor and illiterate, said Liora Engel, director of the organization’s Literacy Department.

Her job is not to brag about the strength of the countries studied, but to point out where there are gaps, where the quality of life is very low, where the funds are not reaching people who can use them, she said.

Part of the problem is that “money spent on literacy programs for adults mainly goes to people who already have an income, and money spent on programs for children is mostly targeted at the very poor,” said Engel.

There are also other issues.

“It’s not only about content or teaching methodology, but how it’s organized. It’s not only a lack of teachers, or not enough of them, but a lack of coordination and management of the program,” she said.

Culture plays a role, as well. While programs in many places have made significant progress, in others they have simply “gotten out of hand,” Engel said.

Teachers are paid well and they can go home when they are tired, which is good for the families, but it doesn’t always make the most sense for the teaching program, she said.

To ensure that programs that are successful continue to grow, the international community needs to work together to find consensus on the most effective programs, Engel said.Q:
