* **Amp:** See the sidebar “Amp,” later in this chapter, which has similar features to Photoshop.
* **Picasa:** See the sidebar “Photo-Elements,” later in this chapter.
* **Adobe Fireworks:** This program, discussed in Chapter 13, is for creating presentations and some types of artwork.
* **Adobe Flash:** Adobe Flash is the software program used for creating animations, but it is also used in creating web pages.
* **Flash Catalyst:** This program, discussed in Chapter 17, is for creating web pages that are both for viewing by a browser and also for viewing as a standalone application.
* **Shockwave:** This program is used in some web browsers to view some types of video and animation.
* **Windows Live Movie Maker:** Movie Maker is part of the Windows Live Essentials suite, and it’s used for creating videos on your computer.

## Getting Creative with Photoshop Elements

_Photoshop Elements_ (formerly Adobe Photoshop Creative Suite) is a free program that enables you to create stunning images and then also perform basic image editing. You can use the same tools, including brushes, in-image effects, layers, and filters, as you would in Photoshop, to make your images even more creative. Elements is available for all Windows users and Mac users.

## Figuring Out How Elements Works

Elements is a simple to use program with a lot of features. It enables

Photoshop is famous for its ability to make excellent images (or in the case of professional photographers, even super-high-quality images). It can also make images that you want to save in your personal collection, even when they are not perfect. What it’s not very good at is making high-quality images. This is because the core of Photoshop is not about making very high quality images — it’s about opening images that you need to edit and save, and that only takes a few clicks. However, all the settings and controls for the photo editing features are hidden in tiny menus, which only an experienced and well-versed user can find (and understand), especially since they are hard to use.

There are other photo editing programs. However, they tend to be very complex and require a lot of time and effort to learn. So we want to simplify the use of Photoshop for regular people, and that’s why we created Pixlr-o-matic for iPhone. Pixlr-o-matic takes a simple approach: Every action is in a single place and very easy to use (but it does have plenty of settings). And it is free and comes with a one-month trial.

Step 1

Open an image that you want to edit in Pixlr-o-matic: the first thing that you’ll want to do is open an image. Click Edit, then Photos. This will show the photos from your camera roll, iPhone Photos, or any picture file that you’ve imported. Open an image. Note that each image has different UI. For example, the iphone UI has fewer options. If you’re viewing the iPhone UI, you’ll see all the default editing options and you don’t need to go into the layers, brushes, adjustment layers and all the other settings, like you will on the desktop.

Step 2

If you’ve edited your photo before, it probably has multiple layers. If it doesn’t have any layers, just click the plus icon in the top-right to add a new layer:

It may be helpful to click the x button in the top-right to remove a layer.

Step 3

Now you have the image open in a new editing canvas. The image will be on a new layer. You can use one of the editing tools to edit the image, or you can click a button for another tool.

Note that all the editing tools are just buttons for Pixlr.

The truth is that politicians don’t like taxes. It feels too much like theft for them to do anything about it.

I’m not sure why.

It doesn’t feel like theft because it’s so common. We all pay our taxes. Each one of us can see it on our pay stubs and each time we get a bill at the end of the month, we have to pay taxes on the part of the bill that wasn’t paid by the government. It feels perfectly natural to me.

But politicians don’t feel comfortable with taxes because in general, the people they’re elected to represent are suspicious of taxes. Who are they, they ask, to raise my taxes? Who are they, really, to ask me for anything?

Therefore, in order to get elected, politicians must make themselves appear to be more in sympathy with the common person than they really are. They must give the impression that they will keep taxes low, and that they will spend the revenue carefully.

That is the primary purpose of all the spending programs that make up our federal budget. They aren’t there to do anything meaningful about poverty. They’re there to make politicians feel good about themselves. This is why only 2% of the federal budget goes to cancer research, compared to all the money we spend on the military. It’s not because we have enough food for everyone, or that we need the military. It’s just the easiest way to fool the people, so that they’ll vote for more spending.

Politicians aren’t stupid. They realize that they cannot pass a bill requiring corporations to pay their fair share of taxes. But they are also smart enough to know that they can attract our sympathy by offering tax relief for the average middle-class taxpayer.

What if the government were to pass a law requiring that corporations pay their taxes, and that all business profits be paid out as salary? That would get our attention. There would be much more public outcry about corporate greed, and not just from the few politicians who think of it as the common man’s tool.

Instead of eliminating corporate tax loopholes, we need to eliminate all loopholes. Our federal government should not be handing special tax breaks to any particular company, no matter how large they are or how unfairly they make use of the system.

There is a certain amount of pain that is inevitable in trying to recapture a portion of our taxes that are currently being wasted on corporate and military spending. But the great majority of people

“You’re actually getting a more substantial portion of protein than you might suspect,” says Katie Wallace, a registered dietitian nutritionist with the USDA’s food and nutrition service, part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. “You’re getting a couple of egg whites, which are more protein-rich than some of the other protein sources out there.”

Yes, an egg white has 10g of protein, compared to 7.3g in a whole egg. But in the context of a nutritionally-balanced diet, it’s not that big of a deal. The Egg Nutrition Center, a division of the American Egg Board, points out that the average egg provides more than enough protein for adults.

In fact, when the USDA recently updated its Dietary Guidelines for Americans, they recommended that we each eat about three egg whites a week. “We’re supposed to have five or six a week,” says Randy Kaufman, a registered dietitian nutritionist in Berkeley, California. The amount of protein we need depends on our size and activity level, so just like the RDA for any other nutrient, it’s up to each individual to find the amount of protein that best fits their needs. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration doesn’t require that foods contain this amount, so check the nutrition label for details.

Protein, though, is not the most important thing to look for when you’re buying eggs. “Eggs are really, really easy to get these days,” Kaufman says. “So, if you were really concerned about protein intake, you’d look at other options.”

Tip 5: Look for free-range eggs.

Free-range eggs are a bit harder to find, but they’re worth the effort. These hens are given the freedom to roam around and mate as they please, while indoor hen houses are limited to pre-determined hours to eat, sleep, and lay. But roosters can’t do their job properly, which affects the egg shells and can make them tougher. (Pretty much all hens, though, are fed a balanced diet, so they don’t get too skinny.)

Egg shells should be bright yellow with no spots or blemishes.
